California considers warning labels for energy drinks

Due to growing health concerns, beverages containing high amounts of caffeine — including sodas and energy drinks — may soon be required to have warning labels in California.

A state advisory board has been formed to consider the dangers of caffeine-loaded drinks. Warning labels could be mandated under Proposition 65, The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, which requires the state to identify chemicals that could cause cancer or birth defects.

“If I were a pregnant woman or a woman thinking about being pregnant, I would want to know, should I be avoiding caffeine?” said Renee Sharp, a senior analyst with the Environmental Working Group. “It's a really important question, and I think people are looking for answers.”

The label requirement would not cover coffee and tea, which have comparable caffeine levels, because the stimulant occurs naturally in those beverages. Proposition 65 only applies to chemicals that are added to foods or products.

Energy drinks contain an average of 80 mg of caffeine per 8-ounce serving. That’s about the equivalent to a cup of coffee. On top of that, energy drinks are also loaded with up to 65 grams of sugar per 16-ounce can. That’s 15 teaspoons of sugar!

These concerns have not scared away consumers, who continue to saturate an explosive energy drink market. In fact, annual energy drink sales are expected to hit $10 billion by 2010.
